Goal Setting

Playing an instrument can help to develop life skills as well as musicianship and at Creative Keys Music we understand that not everyone wants to be a concert musician or a performer. We strive to implement goal setting and achievements, accountability, perseverance and critical thinking skills into our lessons. These building blocks are the corner stones of success and are invaluable to students’ future achievements in education and the workplace.

Lessons for Children

Lessons

These lessons are available to children ages 5 and up. Lessons encompass practical and theory to help the student achieve a better understanding of music. Technical skills are introduced in a timely manner using music which is interesting and enjoyable to the student. All students will be taught to read music, recognize notes on the keyboard, rhythm patterns and technical skills. Music notation is also introduced using music theory. Children under 7 must have a parent present during the lesson.

Practice

Part of playing an instrument is practicing. Students will be given a suggested practice schedule based on each individual. The schedule is designed to help the student learn to practice efficiently. A practice calendar will be provided to each student so they can track their practice sessions. Incentive prizes are offered to students who practice regularly and follow their suggested practice schedule. PARENTS: Please be aware that very young children may need assistance during practice.

RCM Exam Preparation

RCM is the acronym for The Royal Conservatory of Music. This is an internationally recognized music program whose focus is mainly classical music. The Certificate Program offers grades 1 to 10 in practical exams as well as various theory exams with the opportunity to gain your ARCT (Associate of Royal Conservatory of Toronto) letters in Performance and/or Pedagogy. Performance Program

This is a piano performance program offered to students who are serious about achieving their RCM grades in piano. All students participating in the RCM program must be in the performance program. This program focuses on performing and exams and requires a commitment of both the student and parent. A strict practice regime must be followed and all Performance Program students are required to attend a minimum of 2 Formal Recitals, 2 Festivals, 2 Group Classes and 1 Masterclass per year. Exam prep will be the main focus of each lesson and students must also complete theory exams to accompany their practical learning. Students in this program are required to take a minimum 45 minute lesson.

Lessons for Adults

Lessons

Adult lessons are open to anyone 18 years of age or older. Your instructor will meet with you to determine the areas of music you are interested in studying and help you set goals based on this information. Lessons will be tailored to each individual and will incorporate the necessary skills required to meet your goals.

Practice

Your instructor will give you guidelines to help you get the most out of your practice sessions. A practice calendar will be made available to you should you wish to track your practice time however it is not a requirement.

Lessons for Special Needs Individuals

Lessons

These lessons are open to special needs individuals from children to adults. If you are unsure our instructor will meet with the individual and either or both parents, support worker/supportive roommate to determine whether private lessons are a suitable choice. Lessons are planned according to individual learning abilities and are fun and relaxing. Things that may be included in your lessons are reading music, recognizing notes on the keyboard, playing by ear, rhythm patterns, technical skills and music theory. In most cases parents or support workers will be asked to attend the lessons with the student.

Practice

Practicing is an important part of playing an instrument and is highly encouraged. The instructor will work with the student and parents or support worker to help develop an individual practice schedule for each student. A practice calendar will be provided to each student so they can track their practice sessions. Incentive prizes are offered to students who practice regularly and follow their suggested practice schedule. Please be aware that assistance may be required during practice.

Guitar and Ukulele Lessons

Guitar and Ukulele lessons are available to children ages 7 and up and to adults. Lessons encompass practical and theory to help the student achieve a better understanding of music. All students will be taught to read music, learn the names of the strings and location of notes on the guitar, recognize rhythm patterns and be introduced to chording. Beginner Fingerstyle Technique is also offered. Music notation is also introduced using music theory. Children under 8 must have a parent present during the lesson.

Group Lessons

Creative Keys Music offers 2 group lesson activities per year. These take the place of your regular lesson time for that week and all students are encouraged to attend. A makeup lesson will not be given for this if a student decides not to attend the group lesson. Group lessons are a great chance to practice for a recital, perform for your peers, get to know other students and have fun! Students will be grouped according to age and/or skill level.

Master Classes

Creative Keys Music offers Master Classes with a highly educated piano pedagogue every year. Students are encouraged to attend as the classes are invaluable to the learning process. Performance program students must attend a minimum of one 30 minute masterclass per year. The cost for these is not included in your regular lesson cost and will be invoiced separately.

Recitals

Performing can be a fun and rewarding experience for both students and parents. Creative Keys Music holds two formal recitals per year. All students who are registered with Creative Keys Music may participate in the recitals. Students are encouraged but not required to perform in a recital. Students are expected to practice diligently and have regular lesson attendance in order to prepare for the recital. Those who do not meet this criteria will not be allowed to participate. Attendees of the recitals are required to bring a non-perishable food item to donate to the Airdrie Food Bank.

Creative Keys Music also holds invitation only performances at local venues and community events. Only students who are dedicated, practice hard and are ready to perform will be invited to participate. These performances are at no cost to the student.

Other Performing Opportunities

Throughout the year your instructor will arrange opportunities for students to perform at music festivals and competitions. There are additional costs for these performances set by the Organization hosting the festival. Payments for these will be made directly to the festival host.  Students will be notified well in advance of the registration for these dates so that all who wish to participate will be available and well prepared. Costs of these performances are the responsibility of the student.
